I Felt Beautiful When…

Feeling beautiful doesn’t always come easy to women, and I have most recently realized that it doesn’t come easy for men, either. We never feel attractive enough, tall enough, short enough, skinny enough, thick enough, strong enough. Can you remember when you felt beautiful or handsome? Was it this morning when you looking in the mirror? I can remember the last time I felt beautiful.. So here are 3 verses to help you realize you are beautiful, too!

Have you ever truly read Psalm 139:13-18? No? Do so now:

“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand— when I awake, I am still with you.”

-‭‭Psalm‬ ‭139:13-18‬ ‭NIV‬‬

I was receiving counsel last year for my anxiety, and that was the first time I read it in its entirety. Now put your name in the blanks:

“For you created (    ‘S) inmost being; you knit (    ) together in (   ‘S ) mother’s womb. I praise you because (    ) am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. (  ‘s) frame was not hidden from you when (he/she) was made in the secret place, when (    ) was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw (   ‘S ) unformed body; all the days ordained for (    ) were written in your book before one of them came to be. How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand— when I awake, I am still with you.”

-‭‭Psalm‬ ‭139:13-18‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Wow! Right? I think it is a more powerful verse when you make the verse personal.

When I read that verse as a personal truth, I was given a new light to how I should see myself. If God handcrafted me, why should I think that any imperfections should define me? He made those purposely to make me unique. Sure, I still get upset, but I no longer try so hard.

Look at the next sunset or sunrise. He made that and you. Look at the birds and animals outside. He made them and you.

 You are beautiful

Now read Genesis 1:27

“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”

-‭‭Genesis‬ ‭1:27‬ ‭NIV‬

And 1 Corinthians 15:49

“And just as we have borne the image of the earthly man, so shall we bear the image of the heavenly man.”

-‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭15:49‬ ‭NIV‬‬

So if we are each created in the image of God and Creator, himself, aren’t we already perfect, at least in His sight? He sees Himself and knows He is perfect. So for us to be created and handcrafted into His image… Wow!

  1. Oh this is wonderful! I’ve read this to the kids but I’ve not thought to put their names in it. I LOVE that!! Thank you for sharing. I’ve struggled so much with this, and raising 2 girls, it’s hard not to pass my lack of confidence, my vanity and my struggle with beauty onto them. Your post is a blessing.

  2. I recently started using my name when the word “you” comes up in scripture. It is so powerful!! It really does change your perception that God’s promises are for me!!

  3. I find the only way I can be OK with my self image is when I find my identity in Christ. I think it’s a mighty tool of our enemy to point out our imperfections. I remember talking in a group of women a few summers back and one gal said she accepted that she wasn’t pretty but she had other qualities. I was stunned! She was pretty!! Where have we gone wrong to convince ourselves otherwise. An important post. Thanks!

    • Thank you for reading and replying, Traci. I think we are our own worst critic. We look very closely whereas others only glance. But even if we are looking closely, it shouldn’t matter because God doesn’t just glance at us.
